Tuesday's MLB Best Bets
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Los Angeles Angels (+180) at San Diego Padres (-218) | O/U 7.5 (-105/-115)
It appears Dylan Cease is having a difficult season, but his high ERA is mainly due to one outing in which he allowed nine earned runs against the Athletics. Since then, he has a 3.16 ERA in six starts.
Cease has been one of the top pitchers the last few seasons and has finished in the top four in Cy Young voting in two of the previous three seasons. If he can get on a run like he has in recent memory, then he can erase his bad start. He's changed up his pitching strategy and is using his fastball less, going from 43% last year to 37.3% this season while making the slider his lead pitch. It's been successful, as hitters are batting .205 with a 39% whiff rate.
The Angels are quickly erasing the decent start they had to the season, and their plummeting offense has led to them now ranking 27th in weighted batting average (.292). It could be another solid out and win for Cease and the Padres.
Pick: Padres -1.5 (+102)
New York Yankees (-142) at Seattle Mariners (-218) | O/U 7.5 (+102/-122)
Somebody in the starting rotation needed to step up for the Yankees in Gerrit Cole's absence, and it's been their other big-money starter. Max Fried made a big splash by signing with the Yankees, and he's made a bigger impact, becoming the best pitcher in the league. Fried appears to be an early Cy Young candidate with his MLB-leading 1.05 ERA and 0.99 WHIP. Location is key for someone like Fried, who isn’t overpowering and has always been known to have great control and can keep the ball away from the hitter's power zone.
The Mariners have a better offense than last year, but Fried has a great history against this lineup, with Seattle batting a lifetime .095 and slugging .119. You add the red-hot Yankee bats who just scored 11 runs on Monday, and they could grab another win.
Pick: Yankees Moneyline (-142)
Chicago White Sox (+180) at Cincinnati Reds (-218) | O/U 9.0 (-118/-102)
The Reds are in the middle of a rough patch, having lost seven of their last 10 games, but the good news is that no one in the National League Central is making a push, and they are still only four games out. There's optimism with the talent they have, especially with today's starter, Andrew Abbott. His last two starts have been incredible, as he threw for a combined nine innings, allowed zero earned runs and struck out 11.
Abbott doesn't have an overpowering fastball, but he puts great spin on it, and it rises as it moves through the zone, getting swings and misses. He's also increased the use of the change-up, which is keeping hitters off balance. He faces the White Sox, who continue to struggle at the plate and have only scored more than three runs in three of their last nine games. They also rank 28th in barrel rate.
Pick: Reds -1.5 (-102)
