This is a bit of a risky play, but we are anticipating a return to normalcy across the board tonight. Last night, the Giants, the third-most strikeout-prone team in baseball, struck out just five times. Granted, there are still two innings to play from that game, but either way, the Giants had a solid day making contact.
Tonight, the Giants will face Luke Weaver, a pitcher who has not registered more than three strikeouts in a game since June 6. Yet, Weaver has good career numbers against the Giants, as he has struck out 17 batters in 43 at-bats. With just a decent night, Weaver can easily clear this number.
Anthony Rizzo is a perfect 2-2 against Patrick Sandoval in his career. It's not a large sample size, but it's enough to give us some confidence in him going over 0.5 total bases tonight.
Rizzo has failed to hit safely in his last two games, but he did have a four-game hitting streak prior to his brief slump. Sandoval has allowed 90 hits in 85.2 innings, and he has a WHIP of 1.47. Most hitters are having success against him, so it only makes sense to back Rizzo in this spot.
Another hitter with a favorable matchup tonight is Jeimer Candelario. Candelario is 3-7 in his career against Cubs' starter Jameson Taillon. Two of his three hits have been for extra bases. Additionally, Candelario has hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games.
Taillon is coming off a phenomenal 8.0-inning, one-hit performance against the Yankees, but prior to that game, batters were teeing off against him. He had allowed at least four earned runs in four of his previous five games, and he had allowed at least five hits in each of those contests.
