MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 97-49
He’s a headache to watch pitch, so don’t, but in this matchup, Lance Lynn should be able to find at least six strikeouts. The Rockies are always known for their strikeouts, especially when they come off playing away from Coors Field. Colorado has the fourth-highest K% (25.8%) against righties. While Sonny Gray did not find six last night, Lynn should be able to eke his way over this as long as he manages to find the zone. He has five or more strikeouts in eight of his 12 starts this year.
Hogan Harris is coming off his first start of the year against Tampa Bay and looked pretty good. He finished with seven strikeouts in the game, but that’s largely due to the Rays striking out at the fifth-highest rate against southpaws this year. Today he takes on another American League East opponent. However, unlike Tampa, Toronto hardly ever strikes out versus left-handers. They are 28th in K% (18.4%), and seven of the 12 left-handed starters to face them have stayed under this, including Garrett Crochet (four strikeouts). Only one of those hurlers surpassed five strikeouts - Cole Ragans (nine).
Harris only has around 75 innings in the big leagues and had an 8.00 K/9 last season across his 63 innings of work. FanGraphs projections see him with an 8.25 K/9 going forward, so it’s hard to see him getting over this given the matchup.
Joe Ryan is coming off a rough start, hence the discounted line, because typically this price is significantly worse for the man with two first names. Ryan is under this in 10 of his 12 starts this season, and it’s not like his opponent walks very much either. The Pirates are 25th in BB% (7.1%) over the past 30 days against righties. Seventeen of the past 25 right-handers to face them have stayed under this line.
