New England Patriots vs. Washington Redskins NFL Sports Betting Guide

The Washington Redskins are coming off the worst of their four straight losses to open the season, a 24-3 blowout at the hands of the rival New York Giants. The good news is that defeat is in the past. The bad news is that it won’t get any easier for the Redskins as they host the New England Patriots this week.

While the Patriots are expected to win, can the Redskins at least put up a fight and cover?

Overview

Washington has gone 3-22 in the last 25 instances in which it was listed as an underdog of 10 points or more, so that’s not a great sign. Head coach Jay Gruden hasn’t revealed who his starting quarterback will be for this contest but let’s be realistic, he doesn’t have any good options. Rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins looked shell-shocked when he was forced into action against the Giants last week. He ended up with three interceptions – one which was taken back for a touchdown. Case Keenum also looked awful in limited action and was in a walking boot until Thursday. However, it looks like Gruden will go with the back-from-the-dead Colt McCoy, who has barely functioned as a backup in his career. Regardless of whom the Redskins start on Sunday, their quarterback is going to struggle against the top-ranked defense in the NFL. New England is allowing an average of 6.8 points per game.

As for the Redskins’ defense, they have allowed an average of 29.5 points per game. That number is right in line with the 30.5 points per game the New England offense has averaged through four straight wins.

That number was even higher before the Patriots were held to 16 points in last week’s win over Buffalo. It marked the first time this season that New England has been held to under 30 points. However, the Bills – especially in Buffalo – tend to give Brady some trouble.

Brady and company should be motivated to bounce back with a much better performance on the road this week. They have some kinks to work through with their offense as Brady and Josh Gordon aren’t quite on the same page and Julian Edelman is banged up. However, if rookie Daniel Jones and Mitchell Trubisky can pick Washington apart, think about what Brady can do.

Trends

  • New England is 15-5 SU in last 20 games vs. NFC opponents
  • Patriots are 10-0 SU in last 10 when favored by 10+ points
  • New England is 2-2 ATS this season
  • Washington is 1-3 ATS this season
  • Over is 3-1 in Redskins games this season

Bottom Line

With the Redskins struggling as badly as they have been this season and New England finding ways to win even when they aren’t at their best, this game could get ugly in a hurry. The Patriots should have no problem scoring 30 points or more in this contest. Meanwhile, Washington could have a difficult time finding the end zone at all.

Bill Belichick still remembers that Colt McCoy beat him in 2010, as he stated in a press conference earlier this week. Don’t expect him to take this team lightly.

Prediction: Patriots 38, Washington 6

Pick: Patriots -16
