San Francisco 49ers at Indianapolis Colts Betting Preview
The NFL Playoffs are less than a month away, so it’s time to go hard or go home. The 49ers stood their ground as an NFC Wild Card team by conquering the Tennessee Titans 37-24 in Week 15. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings dazzled with two touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Colts fell out of the AFC playoff standings as a result of their 18-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Quarterback Philip Rivers finished 18-of-27 with 120 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception in his first start in nearly five years.
The Rivers storyline steals the show on Monday night, but this clash also features two elite running backs. Indianapolis’ Jonathan Taylor is averaging over 100 rushing yards per contest for the third time in his career as he leads the NFL with 1,443 yards on the ground. San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey has tallied 1,742 yards from scrimmage and 20 total touchdowns thanks to a league-high 372 touches. Overall, the Colts (357.5) and 49ers (347.5) check in as top-10 offenses in yards per game.
One defensive stop could be the difference between winning and losing. That’s where San Francisco obtains an edge. Indianapolis finds itself in ruts where it struggles to get off the field. The Colts have allowed the second-highest third-down conversion rate at home (50.7%) and logged the third-most missed tackles (111). The 49ers rely on discipline and toughness to prevail. They draw the second-fewest penalties per game (5.2) and have given up just four conversions on 10 fourth-down attempts on the road.
I’ll back San Francisco to emerge victorious. Bank on the 49ers exploiting defensive holes, especially since cornerback Sauce Gardner remains out (calf) in Indianapolis’ secondary. I don’t buy that Rivers can sustain enough drives with his arm when defenses are focused on shutting down Taylor. The 44-year-old’s 4.4 yards per attempt was the second-lowest mark in Week 15. Keep in mind that the Colts have lost each of their last 11 contests as underdogs facing an NFC foe. Expect that streak to continue.
Week 16 Monday Night Football Parlay
Let’s circle back to Jauan Jennings. The former Tennessee Volunteer has found the end zone at least once in five of his last six games. He has a whopping 12 red-zone targets since Week 8, which is the fifth-most among NFL wide receivers during that stretch.
Quarterback Brock Purdy has faith in Jennings to work himself open or win jump balls. That is noteworthy, considering the Colts have surrendered the second-most yards to opposing wide receivers this campaign (2,407). Trust Jennings to stay hot.
