NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer: Steelers vs. Browns Picks

NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer: Steelers vs. Browns Picks

Welcome back to another edition of our NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer. We just saw an AFC North team lose on the road as a field-goal favorite in Week 3 when the Pittsburgh Steelers upset the Cincinnati Bengals. Now the Steelers head to Cleveland to take on the Browns, fresh off a second consecutive victory. The Browns’ defense stepped up big in Week 3, and I’m expecting them to play well for the second straight home contest.

Divisional underdogs cooked last year on Thursday night, and I’m expecting that trend to continue.

Last year, over 16 weeks of traditional Thursday Night Football matchups, divisional underdogs went 9-1 against the spread (ATS) on Thursdays and 4-6 straight up (SU).

Don’t mean to spoil my pick… but I’m all in on the Dawg Pound for Thursday Night Football.

Prime-Time Highlight (Through Week 3)

  • Favorites: 3-6-1 ATS
  • Underdogs: 6-3-1.
  • Home: 6-2-1; Road: 2-6-1.
  • Overall O/U: 4-6

    Trends

    • Pittsburgh is 0-4 all-time on Thursday nights in Cleveland and hasn’t won there at all (any day) since 2021 - and they’re 1-8 on the road overall in Thursday Night Football matchups.
    • Cleveland’s also 6-1 in its last seven meetings hosting this series.
    • Pittsburgh’s current streaks through Week 3: 2-1 straight up (one-game win streak), 2-1 against the spread (one-game cover streak), 1-2 toward the total (one-game OVER streak).
    • Cleveland’s current streaks through Week 3: 2-1 straight up (two-game win streak), 2-1 against the spread (two-game cover streak), 2-1 toward the total (one-game UNDER streak).
    • Pittsburgh is 0-1 ATS and 0-1 O/U as the road team in 2026 (through Week 3). As a favorite specifically, Pittsburgh is 1-0 ATS and 0-1 O/U in 2026.
    • Cleveland is 1-0 ATS and 0-1 O/U as the home team in 2026 (through Week 3). As an underdog specifically, Cleveland is 2-1 ATS and 2-1 O/U in 2026.
    • The Browns are 6-1 ATS as home underdogs in their last seven games (7-2 ATS at home).
    • Cleveland is 2-5 O/U at home since 2025.
    • The Browns are 2-6 ATS after a win since 2024.
    • Browns ATS as home underdogs: 13-8 (61.9%) since 2021, 12-8 (60.0%) since 2022.
    • Cleveland has covered the spread in five of its last six games.
    • Per Covers.com, the Browns are 7-17-2 ATS in games immediately after an outright win since 2022 - and Cleveland just won outright in Week 3 (21-18 over Carolina).

    Injuries

    Steelers

    • CB Jalen Ramsey played through a broken wrist Sunday and is a game-time decision. RB Rico Dowdle will not play.

    Browns

    • OG/OC Elgton Jenkins is still in the concussion protocol and will not play.

    Betting Preview

The process, the process, the process. I said it in the intro - divisional underdogs are the side to be firmly on for Thursday Night Football. I never want to be an advocate for betting on Deshaun Watson. But I’ll make an exception when he’s facing Aaron Rodgers with home-field advantage.

The Browns are 7-0 in Thursday games since 2018, the longest active Thursday winning streak in the NFL and tied for the fourth longest in NFL history. The home team has covered the spread in the last nine Pittsburgh-Cleveland games. The last three games all went over the projected total.

As I wrote last week in backing the Brownies (not an official play, but a strong lean), the Browns are notoriously tough outs at home, given how well they have performed ATS in this underdog role in Cleveland. Even against how bad they are after they win ATS.

The Steelers’ offense is also probably getting an inflated boost from beating up the Bengals… a matchup they have won in the past.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Pittsburgh now has four games with 30+ points over the last two seasons, three of them against the Bengals. Since 2025, the Steelers have averaged 31.7 points per game against the Bengals and 20.9 points per game against all other opponents.

I think the offense comes crashing back to Earth against the Browns’ defense, which ranks second in pressure generated this season.

Rookie WR Denzel Boston has averaged 65 yards per game in his first three games, with 40+ yards in every game. Give me the over on his 35.5 receiving yards prop line. Child please. The Steelers’ defense has allowed 247 receiving yards on downfield throws to wide receivers aligned out wide (ninth-most). A whopping 91% of the Steelers’ production to wideouts has been to perimeter wide receivers. Their secondary is banged up, which is good news for the Browns receivers.

Boston has found the end zone in three straight games (two touchdowns and one two-point conversion).

Veteran WR DK Metcalf has gone under the consensus 44.5-yard mark in three straight games. Last week, he caught just two of his five targets for 31 yards and his first touchdown of the season (a six-yard score) - but his target share fell to its lowest mark of the season, dipping as Michael Pittman Jr. returned to the lineup.

And per NFL Next Gen Stats, Metcalf has been in motion on 0.6% of his snaps, the lowest rate among wide receivers (minimum 100 snaps) this season and the lowest of his career. He has averaged 0.8 yards per route run this season, his fewest through Week 3 of any season in his career.

Metcalf’s yards per route run against man coverage has declined in each season since 2021 (3.3), falling to 0.8 this season. The Browns have used man coverage on 40.9% of opponent dropbacks, the highest rate in the NFL this season. Browns No. 1 CB Denzel Ward will lock down Metcalf on Thursday night. Take the under on Metcalf’s yardage prop.

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, Ward has allowed 0.4 yards per coverage snap (fifth-lowest mark) and 0.4 yards after the catch per reception (fewest) among outside cornerbacks with at least 50 coverage snaps this season. In total, Ward has allowed seven receptions for 44 yards and two touchdowns on 13 targets.

Steelers TE Pat Freiermuth went UNDER 3.5 catches in both games versus the Browns last season. His receptions prop is being “propped” up by his first two games, but his usage hasn’t been all that special this season. He’s 22nd in target share and 23rd in route participation. Freiermuth also splits snaps nearly 50/50 with Darnell Washington (who is coming off season-highs in routes, targets, snaps and yards).

Quinshon Judkins to score the first touchdown (+600) is my favorite first touchdown scorer bet. The Browns are at home and finally got the ground game going last week (with Judkins rushing for 70 yards on 18 carries). His opportunities have increased over the last three games (14, 17, 20).

Per NFL Next Gen Stats, the second-year running back has faced light boxes (six or fewer defenders in the box) on just 23.8% of his carries (eighth-lowest), recording a 50.0% rushing success rate in those situations, the eighth-highest mark in the NFL (minimum 10 carries).

Pittsburgh’s defense has played with a light box in run defense on 46.8% of opposing carries (fifth-highest). The Steelers’ defense has contacted the ball-carrier behind the line of scrimmage on 52.1% of designed runs this season, the third-highest rate in the NFL. On these carries, however, the Steelers have allowed 153 yards after contact, the second-most in the NFL.
