PGA Tour Championship 2022: Sam Burns Betting Odds, Preview, & Prediction

The PGA Tour’s 2021-2022 season comes to an end with this week’s Tour Championship. The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup standings will compete for a $65 million purse that includes a first-place prize of $18 million. No pressure, huh?

Defending champ Patrick Cantlay will be part of the field at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The tournament uses a Starting Strokes scoring system, effectively giving players a head start based on their position in the FedEx Cup point standings. As last season’s point leader, Cantlay began the Tour Championship at -10 and eventually finished at -21 on the par-70 host course.

This year, Scottie Scheffler enters the Tour Championship as the leader in the FedEx Cup point standings, followed by Cantlay (who won last week’s BMW Championship) and Will Zalatoris.

Sam Burns Course History

Sam Burns made his first appearance in the Tour Championship last year and started at -4. After four days, the American-born golfer finished in 18th place at -6. It’s worth noting that Burns scored better every subsequent day: 71, 70, 69, 68. 

Sam Burns Recent Form 

Burns came out of the gate hot this year, winning the Sanderson Farms Championship at -22 back in early October. He followed that up with two top-fives and a top-10 over his next four events. All together, Burns has three PGA wins this year (Valspar Championship, Charles Schwab Challenge), four additional top-fives, and two top-10s. 

Burns hasn’t been as competitive in recent events. The Louisiana-native hasn’t had a top-10 finish since June when he finished T4 at the RBC Canadian Open. However, he’s only missed one cut over the six ensuing tournaments. So it’s not that Burns has played poorly, just not good enough to challenge some of the world’s best. 

Sam Burns Tour Championship Prediction

Being that the Tour Championship has been played at East Lake Golf Club every year since 2004 (plus 1998, 2000, and 2002), quite a few golfers have experience on the course. Guys like Patrick Cantlay, Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, and Billy Horschel have found plenty of success in Atlanta and are all competing this weekend. 

I think Burns’ game has already peaked this season. He’s not playing competitive enough to be a threat to win the tournament or even finish inside the top five, in my opinion. However, I think getting a plus-money payout to finish inside of the top-10 is worth a shot this weekend. Burns will start with at least a one-stroke advantage over 25 players. Plus, as I mentioned above, Burns finished with a lower score every day that he competed in the event last year. If he can stay somewhere along that trend, we should be in pretty good shape as Sunday evening rolls around.
