Chicago took Game 1 of the weekend series last night with an 8-3 win over Texas. They'll look to keep it rolling this afternoon as they send Lucas Giolito to the bump. The Rangers counter with Martin Perez in this matinee matchup penciled for 2:10 p.m. ET from Guaranteed Rate Field.
Perez has been arguably the best pitcher in the American League this season. The southpaw enters with a 4-2 record to go along with a 1.56 ERA (second) and 0.98 WHIP (11th) over 11 starts in 2022. Perez has posted nine straight quality starts and is coming off of an outing where he limited the Mariners to a pair of earned runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings of work.
Giolito hasn't been overpowering this season, but he's willed his way to a 3.54 ERA and 1.41 WHIP through nine starts. The right-hander last threw on Sunday against the Rays and gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks.
Perez has been dominant this season and at this rate, he may make a great trade piece for the Rangers at the deadline. The left-hander posted a 0.64 ERA over six starts in May and continues to shine. The White Sox have good numbers against him, going 21-63 (.333), but they've collected just six extra-base hits. With the form that he's in, I'll take a shot with him to keep a clean first inning. Giolito, on the other hand, sees his ERA come down to 2.37 when throwing at home and has limited the Rangers to a .138 batting average over 29 career at-bats. Let's ride with NRFI here.
