The Huskies (2-6, 1-3 MAC) are fighting to stay in the running for bowl eligibility, but time is running out, and they could be eliminated with a seventh loss Wednesday. The Rockets (4-4, 2-2) are still alive for a bowl, but they’re all but likely out of the mix for a quick jaunt up Interstate 75 to Ford Field in Detroit for the MAC Championship Game.
NIU kept hope alive for a bowl game, posting a 21-7 win over Ball State as a 6.5-point favorite while the Under (41.5) cashed last time out on Oct. 25. That halted a 6-game losing skid, and a 5-game non-cover run. The Under has alternated with the Over in each of the past five outings, with the Under going 6-2 in the past eight contests.
Northern Illinois has scored 21 points in each of the past two games, while prior to that the Huskies had managed 46 total points in the previous five outings with 9.2 PPG. Defensively, NIU has shown some glimpses of brilliance, going for 20 or fewer points in three of the past five games, and five of eight outings.
For Toledo, venue matters. It is coming off a 28-7 loss at Washington State last time out on Oct. 25, as it was a rainy, miserable day on The Palouse. On the road, the Rockets are 0-4 straight up and 1-3 against the spread (ATS), while failing to cover the past three on the road. However, at the Glass Bowl, Toledo has won all four games, while going 4-0 ATS. The Rockets have racked up at least 45 points in all four home games, while allowing a total of 13 points in the past three at the Glass Bowl in wins over Kent State, Akron, and Morgan State.
Let’s roll with Toledo to keep its foot on the gas, boat-racing NIU, while cashing the Over, which is 3-1 in four games at home.
Picks: Toledo -14.5 (-115) & Over 42.5 Points (-110)
The Golden Flashes (3-5, 2-2) take on the Cardinals (3-5, 2-2) at Scheumann Stadium in Muncie, Ind., and both teams are in the exact same position. Each team is looking to keep hope alive for a bowl game, and with a win, each team can move a game above .500 inside the league with a victory.
Kent State surprised Bowling Green 24-21 as a 7.5-point underdog at home on Oct. 25 as the Under (48) cashed. At home, Kent State has been fine, going 3-1 SU, while covering all three games at home against FBS opponents, each against a conference foe. Kent State is also 3-1 ATS in the past four games.
However, the Golden Flashes have also lost all four games on the road this season, with each setback coming by 35 or more points. The Over is 3-1 in four road games for Kent State, while going 2-2 ATS in those outings.
Ball State was tripped up 21-7 at NIU last time out on Oct. 25, while going 1-2 SU/ATS in the past three games, while the Under is 3-1 in the past four outings. The Cardinals are 3-0 SU/ATS at home this season, including an impressive 20-14 win over Ohio on Oct. 4 as a 14.5-point underdog. The Over is 2-1 in three home games.
The Cardinals have won the past three in the series, while going 5-1 SU, with the home team going 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings. The Over has a slight 3-2 edge in the past five meetings, while going 6-3 across the past nine in the series.
Let’s roll the dice on Ball State, and we’ll take the Over lightly.
