College Football Week 7 Bets & Picks

(Odds and lines via BettingPros’ consensus betting information)

Let’s dive into our top college football picks and leans for Week 7.

    Northwestern vs. Michigan State

There are storylines to appreciate here: Pat Fitzgerald faces the team he coached for 17 seasons, and Aidan Chiles takes on his old squad. Both offenses match up well against the opposing defenses, but the edge goes to Northwestern. The Wildcats have a much better offense paired with a weaker defense, while Michigan State is struggling on both sides of the ball.

The Wildcats are 4-1 ATS and rank 12th among 68 P4 teams in offensive EPA and 15th in offensive success rate. They stand out in the passing game, ranking ninth in EPA and 15th in success rate. Michigan State's defense has been well below average, particularly against the pass, ranking 63rd among those 68 teams in EPA and 62nd in success rate.

Michigan State has faced four P4 opponents: Notre Dame, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Illinois, with the Notre Dame and Wisconsin games on the road. The Spartans lost three of those games by at least 17 points. In their lone close game, last week against Illinois, they needed two touchdowns in the final eight minutes to tie the score and force overtime.

Michigan State should be able to score against Northwestern, but its offense ranks 114th in scoring (21.3 PPG), 86th in offensive efficiency and 124th in total offense (311.7 yards per game). Spartans quarterback Alessio Milivojevic is coming off his best game of the season but still hasn't thrown for more than 208 yards in a game. Both teams should be able to score, but Northwestern's offense is the most trustworthy unit in this matchup, giving the Wildcats the edge on the road.

    Pick: Northwestern -7.5

    Wyoming vs. Northern Illinois

The low total has pushed the public to bet heavily on the Over, while the money is split on the spread. Wyoming's last five games have gone Over, while the Huskies have scored just 21 total points in their last two games, both of which went Under.

Somehow, Wyoming's offense is the most trustworthy unit in this matchup, led by mobile quarterback Tyler Hughes and running back Sam Harris, with a physical offensive line paving the way. The Cowboys use the run game to bleed the clock (118th in pace) and control possession. Wyoming ranks 67th in time of possession, while NIU ranks 118th.

Wyoming's defense can be beaten. The Cowboys allowed 35 points to Colorado State and 24 to a middling Central Michigan offense, but NIU doesn't have the offense to take advantage. The Huskies rank last in the FBS in scoring (12.4 PPG), 130th in yards per game, 126th in EPA per play and 107th in success rate. They rank 10th in passing play percentage but just 94th in passing yards per game.

Windy conditions and the elevation in Laramie add to the challenge for NIU, while Wyoming has an extra day of rest after beating San Jose State last Friday. Expect a physical, slow and gritty game, with the home team winning the second half to put this one away.

Pick: Wyoming (-7.5) AND Under 40.5

    Texas Tech vs. Arizona State

Fading Kenny Dillingham can be a tough pill to swallow, but fading the Sun Devils' offense is easy. Among 68 P4 teams, Arizona State ranks 54th in EPA, 67th in third-down conversion rate, 56th in red-zone conversion rate, 49th in points per drive and 47th in explosive play rate.

Texas Tech has played an easy schedule (70th in strength of schedule), but its defense looks legit. The Red Raiders lost plenty of talent to the NFL, with David Bailey, Jacob Rodriguez, Lee Hunter, Romello Height, Skyler Gill-Howard and Cole Wisnewski all getting drafted. Still, they have kept pace by bringing in starters through the transfer portal. Tech ranks seventh in PFF defensive grade, 22nd in points allowed per game (16.2) and 18th in red-zone scoring rate allowed. The Red Raiders have also had two weeks to prepare for this matchup.

The Sun Devils have been stomped by better competition twice, losing 48-20 at Texas A&M and 55-19 to Baylor. Texas Tech's offense hasn't been lighting the world on fire, but Arizona State is averaging just 21.5 points per game against FBS opponents. With a nasty defense and two weeks to prepare, the Red Raiders have the edge. Lay the points with the home team.

    Pick: Texas Tech -14.5

    Oklahoma State vs. Houston

The Cougars have been solid on both sides of the ball, but slowing down Oklahoma State's offense will be a challenge. The Cowboys have been on fire, and quarterback Drew Mestemaker is now tied for eighth in the Heisman odds at +4000. Oklahoma State ranks 24th in scoring (38.2 PPG), sixth in passing yards per game, ninth in offensive success rate and 17th in explosive play rate. The Cowboys also play fast, ranking 21st in pace among FBS teams.

Houston has been even better, ranking 15th in scoring (40 PPG), 12th in total offense, third in offensive success rate, third in points per drive, fourth in EPA per play and first in third-down conversion rate. The Cougars don't play as fast as Oklahoma State, but they still rank near the middle of the pack at 68th in pace.

This game is filled with offensive stars. Oklahoma State has wide receiver Wyatt Young and running back Caleb Hawkins alongside Mestemaker, while Houston counters with wide receiver Amare Thomas and tight end Patrick Overmyer, who have already combined for 10 touchdowns.

Neither defense is a bottom feeder, but both hover around the P4 average. The offenses are outstanding, neither team plays at a slow pace, the weather is clear and these teams have a combined 7-4 record to the Over. The total has already moved up a point since Monday, so get on the Over as soon as you can.

    Pick: OVER 62.5
