At 7:30 p.m. ET, Georgia and Alabama are tentatively scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, although Hurricane Isaias might have other plans for the area, as it bears down on the Gulf coast. In fact, we’re going to do an extensive weather scan of the southeast, and take some games that might be affected by tropical rains, too. Old Dominion Monarchs (+315) at Appalachian State Mountaineers (-410) | O/U 47.5 (-114/-106)
- Leg 1: Appalachian State -9.5 (-115)
- Leg 2: Over 47.5 Points (-114)
- Leg 3: Old Dominion Under 322.5 Total Yards (-114)
Old Dominion (1-4) heads into this game on a major skid, dropping four in a row against FBS opponents since a 31-10 win over FCS Norfolk State to begin the campaign. I’ve recently started picking on ODU, and my FanDuel account thanks me. Last week, the Monarchs were catching just 1.5 points at Georgia State, and it was manhandled 42-10. The Panthers, on a side note, are a very fun team.
ODU has lost three of the past four games by at least 23 points, too, including setbacks at Virginia Tech, home to James Madison, and the aforementioned Georgia State game. The only game it was competitive in was a 20-17 loss at home against East Carolina on Sept. 19, a game it was favored by 2.5 points. The Over is 3-1 in the past four for ODU.
For App State (3-1), it is a very good team. The Mountaineers lost 41-31 at NC State in an entertaining affair, covering as a 12.5-point ‘dog. It has a common opponent, as App went to ECU and took care of business 27-24 on Sept. 12 as a 6.5-point underdog. The Over/Under is 2-2 so far, with the Mountaineers going for 26+ points in all four of its games, while allowing at least 21 points in all three games against FBS opponents.
We’re going to go Appalachian State with the Over in this one. And, we’ll take ODU to go Under in total yardage, as it has averaged 258.4 total yards per game, ranking 138th in the nation, while managing just 152.8 passing yards per game.
Parlay Odds: +434
Ole Miss Rebels (-365) at Vanderbilt Commodores (+285) | O/U 54.5 (-114/-106)
- Leg 1: Vanderbilt +10.5 (-122)
- Leg 2: Under 54.5 Points (-106)
- Leg 3: Ole Miss RB Kewan Lacy 80+ Rush Yards (-110)
Remember when we discussed rain above. The tropical downpours ahead of Hurricane Isaias will bring copious amounts of rainfall to the Nashville area. The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60’s with rain chances at 80% or better from the afternoon through the evening. That makes the Ole Miss (3-1) and Vanderbilt (3-2) a lot more intriguing.
The heavy rain totals with an 11-15 MPH wind will likely cause a run-heavy attack. That’s not terrible news for Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, who is just as good with his feet as he is passing the football. Vanderbilt should be able to keep the game somewhat close, though, as it will be a slog through the raindrops.
Our best bet, though, is taking the Under. Passing yardage should be hard to come by, there will be a lot of drops with a slippery football, and a run-heavy offense will keep the clock moving, which Under betters love.
As such, expect a HEAVY dose of Ole Miss RB Kewan Lacy, and we’ll take him to get to 80+ Rush Yards at near even-money. At 90+, he starts to get into plus-money, if you so choose.
Parlay Odds: +604
Air Force Falcons (-320) at Northern Illinois Huskies (+255) | O/U 46.5 (-114/-106)
- Leg 1: Air Force Alt Spread -6.5 (-105)
- Leg 2: Under 46.5 Points (-106)
- Leg 3: Air Force Over 264.5 Total Rushing Yards (-114)
Air Force (3-1) takes on Northern Illinois (0-4) in a Mountain West game, and the big news here is that Falcons QB Liam Szarka is out for the season due to a lower-leg injury. In steps RB Evan Medders to run the offense.
Now, you’d think that would give NIU the advantage, but there are two things flawed with that thinking. One, the Huskies are horrible. And, two, Air Force doesn’t rely on its quarterback quite the same way other teams in America do. They’ll run, run, and run some more. If Szarka is out, Medders knows how to run the offense the same way, perhaps just not as effectively. Szarka did have seven rushing touchdowns in the first four games, including three multi-score games. That can’t be replicated, but a game against winless NIU is a good, soft landing spot for Medders to cut his teeth as the new starter.
NIU has allowed 36.3 PPG (131st in the nation), 386.0 total yards (104th), and 154.5 rushing yards (91st) per game this season. This is a team which lost 35-14 to the aforementioned Georgia State team, while also falling 28-24 to Illinois State of the FCS on its home turf. Ouch. The Huskies have allowed at least 35 points in all three games against FBS opponents.
Air Force will run, run, and run so more, so go high on its total against a bad NIU team. It’s what Air Force does, which is ironic, as you would think they’d tend to go more to the…air. But, anyway.
