College football is back. We don’t have a full schedule until next week, but we can still enjoy some meaningful games, including a top-10 team in an early conference battle. There have been many changes to Mike Norvell's team, which is coming off an undefeated season. Last season’s headline was that even though they didn't suffer a loss, they were still left out of the College Football Playoff (CFP) tournament.
The offense lost their starting quarterback, running back and top wide receiver. Replacing Jordan Howard will be DJ Uiagalelei, who hit the transfer portal in back-to-back seasons. He had one of his best seasons at Oregon State with 2,648 passing yards and 21 touchdowns. He was able to get vertical, which he struggled with at Clemson, but the problem continued to be accuracy, as he had only a 57.1 competition percentage.
The defense will remain a powerhouse, as they allowed 19.2 points per game last year. Although they lost some starters, they have depth that can fill in.
Last year, Georgia Tech improved and went above .500 for the first time since 2018. The offense will only get better as they return all five starting offensive linemen to protect Haynes King. The quarterback had a breakout season, throwing for 27 touchdowns, and his dual-threat abilities were prominent, with 737 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. If he can keep the interceptions down, the Yellow Jackets could make some noise in the conference.
It will be the first time this FSU offense has real in-game experience. The chemistry won’t be there, which will allow Georgia Tech to keep this within single digits.

SMU at Nevada

The ACC is a whole different conference this year with the addition of PAC-12 teams like Stanford and California. If you want to look at a dark horse in the conference, SMU has potential. They finished last season eighth in points scored per game (38.7) and all of their important players returned.
That includes junior quarterback Preston Stone, who, in his first year as the starter, had a 28:6 TD-to-INT ratio and can sling the ball with 9.3 yards per completion. The rotation of running backs featuring Jaylan Knighton, LJ Johnson Jr. and Camar Wheaton will keep this offense balanced. The Mustangs’ ability to attack on the ground and in the air is why they will average 35+ points per game again.
Jay Norvell made Nevada a powerhouse in the Mountain West but left a void when he went rival Colorado State. Ken Wilson went 4-20 in the last two seasons, so he's out, and former Montana State head coach and Texas DC Jeff Choate is in.
Don't expect an increase in wins, as the roster still lacks talent. Quarterback Brendon Lewis did not have a good 2023, with just two touchdowns and 5.6 yards per completion.
SMU's offense should put up big numbers and their defense doesn't have to be great to stop what could be one of the worst offenses in the country.
