Kansas City Royals (+120) at New York Yankees (-142) | O/U 8.5 (-115/-105)

The Yankees recently played a few series against below-average teams. This should have been an opportunity to gain some ground in the American League East, but they failed. Instead, they have lost seven of their last 11. The good news is no one else in the American League East could take advantage, so they still hold a half-game lead on the Orioles.

The pitching has been the biggest problem this season. Early on, they had the best starter and bullpen ERA, but it has plummeted since in the second half.

Marcus Stroman has been as inconsistent as everyone. After going seven innings and allowing two earned against St. Louis, he struggled against the Rangers, allowing five earned runs.

The Royals are also playing for their postseason lives. They've been making their fans sweat as they recently lost six straight, then won four. The offense has been doing what it needs to, but the pitching has held it down with two shutouts in that span.

Seth Lugo had an unbelievable stretch in the first month and was talked about as an early Cy Young candidate. He struggled in the middle of the year but has been better recently, with two consecutive starts, going seven innings and allowing one earned run.

We saw a lot of runs in the first game, so don’t be surprised if there’s more offense again tonight.

Pick: Over 8.5 Runs (-115)

Chicago Cubs (+136) at Los Angeles Dodgers (-162) | O/U 7.5 (-118/-102)

The Cubs are in a weird spot; they traded pieces away and were sellers at the deadline, but they are still in the playoff hunt. It might be hard to climb over the Braves and Mets, but they need to start playing better with 17 games to go.

That offense they had last week went away in an instant. They had one of the best stretches in the modern era with 92 runs in 11 games. In their three-game series against the Yankees, however, they crossed the plate just once. They rebounded with 10 on Monday, so hopefully, they can regain that momentum.

Shota Imanaga continues to have a brilliant MLB rookie season. He and the Cubs bullpen made history in his last start as they combined for a no-hitter against the Pirates; he went seven innings.

The Padres and Diamondbacks got hot and pulled closer early in July, but the Dodgers have begun to get a little cushion in the National League West.

They currently have the best record in the league, and that is important. A first-round playoff bye would give them a home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Their biggest problem has been pitching injuries. All of their starters missed time at one point, so to be this good shows how deep their roster is.

The Dodgers also have a stud pitcher from Japan. Yoshinobu Yamamoto has been out since June 15 with a rotator cuff. Up until then, he had been amazing, with a 2.92 ERA.

We’ll take Imanaga over Yamamoto coming off not pitching for a few months against a Cubs team that can put up some runs.
