WNBA Picks & Predictions: Thursday (8/20)

As we get closer to the end of the regular season, we'll see a surge from several teams that are still fighting for a spot in the playoffs and/or better seeding. We've got a few such teams playing tonight, which will certainly factor into my WNBA picks for the day.

All three games should be wildly entertaining, but be sure to check the latest official WNBA injury reports before placing your wagers.

Thursday’s Best WNBA Picks & Predictions

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

Indiana Fever vs. Dallas Wings

Indiana has been on a roll, winning seven of its last nine, while Dallas has been trending in the other direction (2-7 in its last nine).

These two teams last played in Indianapolis on Friday, August 14th. The Fever won 98-87. Azzi Fudd has been ruled out for the remainder of the season. Dallas will also be without Aziaha James. As for Indiana, Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell are listed as probable.

Indiana's defense is still suspect on its best days, but when you score 100+ points a game, that's OK.

Dallas has dealt with injuries lately. That likely won't improve soon. The Wings should still score against Indiana. But I don't expect their defense to slow the Fever down, especially if Clark and Mitchell play.

Pick: Fever -3.5 (-105)

Connecticut Sun vs. Las Vegas Aces

Picking a bet for this game should not be too tough. We have a terrible Connecticut Sun team and a perennial championship contender in Las Vegas. The Sun could be without two of its better players, as Brittney Griner and Aaliyah Edwards are both are listed as questionable.

Even with them in the lineup, the offense is barely scoring 70 points a game, averaging just 73.4 points per game (PPG) over its last five games, while allowing 83.6 PPG.

Las Vegas has lost three of its last five, allowing 90+ points in all three. But each loss was against a playoff contender.

The Aces should be able to cover a 14.5-point spread against this Sun team. But I don't trust them to get it done even though they are 4-2 against the spread (ATS) when favored by double digits.

However, the under is 2-5 in the Aces’ last seven games and 0-5 in Connecticut’s last five. The Sun have been playing solid defense over the last five games. They could slow down the Aces enough to keep this one from getting ugly.

But will they score enough to win and cover the spread? I don't know, but either way, the final score will go under its projected total.

Pick: Under 167.5 Points (-105)

Atlanta Dream vs. Los Angeles Sparks

Los Angeles had one thing going for it early in the season - the Sparks were scoring points. While they lost more often than not, they were exciting to watch. But that is no longer the case.

The Sparks still aren't playing defense, but over the last five games, they've averaged only 78.6 PPG. Atlanta, on the other hand, is playing decent defense - 84 PPG allowed over the last five - but has started scoring some points, too, averaging 94.6 PPG over its last five games.

The Dream beat the Sparks in Atlanta 101-92 earlier in the season. There is no reason to think they can't do the same tonight in Los Angeles.

Pick: Dream -8.5 (-105)
