MLB Same Game Parlays & Picks: Monday (8/17)

MLB Same Game Parlays & Picks: Monday (8/17)

With just 11 games on Monday’s MLB slate, I offer my two best MLB same-game parlays (SGPs), including one matchup from both the American and National League.

Baltimore looks for a surprising four-game road sweep of Tampa Bay, but naturally that same-game parlay begins with a Rays moneyline play as a regression to the mean. My other three-leg SGP looks at the Padres-Mets matchup between two hot offenses.

Let’s dive into the two best MLB SGPs for Monday, August 17th.

Baltimore Orioles vs. Tampa Bay Rays

Baltimore has taken three of the first four games of this series, but I don’t expect the AL-best Rays to get swept at home.

Tampa Bay will have to work carefully around Pete Alonso, who is amid an eight-game hitting streak while batting .533 with four home runs. He also has six extra-base hits and nine RBI over that span. The following chart shows how much of a pest Alonso has been at the plate of late.

Month Plate Appearances On-base percentage Slugging percentage
      March/April 134 .306 .362
      May 124 .331 .590
      June 118 .390 .557
      July 104 .375 .466
      August 58 .466 .660

The last leg of this SGP takes advantage of a unique offering from DraftKings with a H2H player prop. Yandy Diaz has -328 odds (carrying a 76.64% implied probability) to record at least one hit. He also has recorded at least one single in each of the last 13 games that the Rays have been home favorites over Baltimore. Diaz should finish the game with more hits than Gunnar Henderson, who is batting just .226 against southpaws, and .211 overall over the last 30 days.

San Diego Padres vs. New York Mets

Prior to yesterday’s 4-3 victory which clinched a three-game sweep of the Nationals, the Mets were 8-3 over their previous 11 games. That stretch was buoyed by a resurgent offense that averaged 5.6 runs per game. In addition, the team collectively batted .264 with a .820 OPS.

New York’s improvements had me looking to its moneyline odds, especially since San Diego got into town late after a lengthy rain delay in Cleveland yesterday. But I have too much respect for the Padres, who are 17-5 since July 24. That’s why I am backing the Over, as San Diego scored five or more runs 12 times in its 17-5 stretch, while batting .274 with a .771 OPS.

Fernando Tatis Jr. has a great chance of plating himself to cash the second leg of this parlay. He has hit eight home runs in his last 27 games after belting just five through his first 96. The Padres leadoff man has been an excellent tablesetter, crossing the plate at least once in four of five games and 10 of the last 12.

Meanwhile, I am taking a conservative approach with Francisco Lindor to simply record a base hit, even though he is the only current Mets hitter to have homered off of Walker Buehler. Lindor entered Sunday slashing .348/.464/.652 over the last seven days. That makes for a great matchup against Buehler, who ranks in the 35th percentile in xBA, and is on pace for the second-worst hard-hit rate allowed of his career.
