NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer: Buccaneers vs Cowboys Picks

NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer: Buccaneers vs Cowboys Picks

Welcome back to another edition of our NFL Thursday Night Football Betting Primer. We are headed to Dallas for Thursday Night Football, where the Cowboys will host the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dallas is a big favorite (more than a touchdown) against a rookie quarterback making his first road start. The expectation is that Dallas dominates this spot, but Cowboys fans know too well how this team can underwhelm versus lofty expectations. Underdogs have cooked on prime time this season, but so have the home teams.

Let’s break down the sides and totals to see what’s the best angle to bet on for TNF.

LFG.

Prime-Time Highlight (Through Week 4)

  • Underdogs are 9-3-1 ATS
  • Favorites 3-9-1 ATS
  • Road teams are 3-8-1 ATS
  • Home teams are 8-3-1 (1 neutral-site game excluded)
  • The O/U is 7-6

  • Dallas has gone Over the total in 11 or 12 of its last 14 games (11-3 or 12-2), dating back to the 2025 season.
  • 6-2-1 toward the over at home since 2025.
  • Tampa Bay is 0-13 ATS in its last 13 games, dating back to the 2025 season (per DraftKings, subject to final closing lines; the Week 4 home game against Green Bay landed on the number, was a push at -3, which makes the stretch 0-12-1 by some measures).
  • The Buccaneers have lost 8 of their last 9 games, dating back to the 2025 season.
  • Dak Prescott has thrown 3 or more touchdowns in each of his last three games as a heavy home favorite (7-plus points).
  • Dak Prescott has not thrown an interception in 7 of his last 8 games, dating back to the 2025 season.

Injuries

  • S Antoine Winfield Jr. has a rib fracture and is likely to miss 2-4 weeks. CB Benjamin Morrison also opened the week with back-to-back DNPs (ruled out). Winfield Jr. leads the team in tackles.

Overall

These are two teams going in completely different directions by all accounts. Dallas is on a three-game cover streak (2-1 SU record), with their only loss coming in the final moments of the Brazil thriller versus the Ravens. They traded for CB Joey Porter Jr. in an effort to improve their defense. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has legitimately nothing going for them. Jalon Daniels has taken over as the team’s starting QB given the thumb injury to Baker Mayfield. They will be without one of their star defensive players, safety Antoine Winfield Jr., against arguably the best offense in the NFL.

Dallas has 3.39 points per drive across the first four this year. This ranks No. 5 among all NFL offenses through the first four games of a season since 2000, as pointed out by The Ringer’s Anthony Dabbundo. One spot ahead of them is the 2007 Patriots. They are averaging 30.5 PPG (average margin of victory by 10.5 points). Compared to Tampa’s 19.5 PPG.

Such a tall task for a HC and team that continually underperformed versus expectations. And had Green Bay not turned the ball over twice deep in Bucs’ territory last week, we could have easily seen them win by 10-plus points.

The trends suggest a simple approach to this game. Dallas games go over, and the Bucs don’t cover. Naturally, that leads us to betting the over on the 47.5 and laying the points with Dallas (although you can alt each line to get a better number on Dallas, such as -3.5, while taking the over on a total such as 42.5 for -110 odds). That’s another approach to betting this game I also really like.

But for simplicity’s sake, we will lay the 8.5 with the Boys at home. Too much firepower on their offense, and having Porter Jr. at CB should help clean things up a bit in the back end for Tampa Bay. The Bucs’ offensive system (dead last in EPA/pass) might not be able to take advantage of Dallas’ bottom-ranked pass defense.

If Tampa sells out to stop the run (as they tend to do) and puts the ball into Dak’s hands more… sign me up.

Jalon Daniels came very close to a rushing TD last week (scrambled from the 11-yard line for 9 yards). He finished with 8 carries for 55 yards (39% of Tampa Bay's rushing yards) - and he was far better after halftime (11-of-14 for 74 yards and a touchdown, no interceptions) than before it (8-of-13, 74 yards, 2 INT). Dallas has allowed the most rushing yards and attempts per game to opposing QBs (47 per game), with 3 of the last 4 going over 50-plus yards. Every QB Dallas has faced has gone over their rushing yards prop. He will run a ton in negative game script. Take the over on his yards and sprinkle some on his anytime TD odds (+300).

Bucky Irving was not targeted once last week. He ran a season-low in routes (12) as well. His targets have dropped for four straight games (7, 4, 2, 0) and I think the decline continues with Daniels under center. Mobile QBs like Daniels don’t check down to their RBs as often as pocket passers. Kenneth Gainwell also works in as a receiver, as he saw two targets last week. Dallas has allowed the 4th-fewest catches to RBs this season (three per game).

George Pickens finished with just 2 of 3 official targets (4 true) for 75 yards (a 6.7% official/8.3% adjusted target share) with a 53-yard deep-middle catch (Q3, 10:43; to the HST 11) and a 22-yard deep-left catch (Q4:52; to the HST 12) that set up the winning score last week, plus a DPI-erased 3rd-and-7 target at the HST 8. Fantasy managers will take 2 splash plays on three targets, but we are hoping he can get back to his Week 3 target share (28.6%).

Pickens is too talented, and Prescott is playing too well for him to stay this quiet for this long. He still has 75-plus yards in back-to-back games and currently 5th in most yards by a WR without a TD yet this season. Given that he was such a TD monster last season, I think this is just variance. I like his odds of scoring on Thursday Night (+120). Also, take the over on his low receiving yards prop versus a pass-funnel Buccaneers defense. Over in back-to-back games at 7 targets per game.
