There are 10 total games on the Major League Baseball (MLB) slate for Monday night, but we’re going to focus on the games with an 8:40 p.m. ET or later start so you have time to formulate those bets. That includes divisional games with playoff implications, at least for the road teams, and one interleague battle, also with NL wild-card hopes on the line. Casey Mize Over 3.5 Strikeouts (-148) & Under 15.5 Outs Recorded (-118)
Mize and the San Diego Padres head into Coors Field looking to stick in that final National League Wild Card spot, as they’re 2.5 games clear of the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks with 13 regular-season games remaining. And, they have a game in hand on the Snakes. The Padres turn to Mize, whom they acquired at the non-waiver trade deadline from the Detroit Tigers in hopes of bolstering the pitching rotation.
Mize has given the team mixed results since joining, and he has been homer-happy. He has served up seven homers in his past four starts across just 17.1 IP, and that’s not great when heading into the rarefied air of Coors Field in Denver. We’re going to do a two-fer with Mize on Monday night.
First off, I still like Mize to get to four strikeouts. The Rockies are a free-swinging bunch, and that’s a low projection from the books, although you’ll have to eat a little chalk to get there. In addition, he hasn’t pitched more than 5.2 IP in any of his past four starts, while lasting five or fewer innings in three of those games, and four or fewer in two of the outings. Since joining the Padres has ended up pitching more than five innings on the road just once in four tries.
Let’s go Under on his pitching outs recorded total, too, which seems like a weird juxtaposition. We’re cheering for him to get few outs, but those he does get, we need to be of the strikeout variety.
Kade Anderson Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-115)
Unfortunately for the Mariners, they’re sinking like a stone in the AL Wild Card standings, which is a logjam of several teams fighting for just one spot. Seattle isn’t quite eliminated yet, but it has a bunch of teams that need to go ice-cold really quickly for Seattle to somehow make it, while the Mariners need to go on a run of historic proportions. The math still maths, but it might not by the end of the week.
Anderson gets a crack against the Los Angeles Angels, a team which does one thing really, really well — strike out. The Angels have struck out 1,416 times this season through 149 games, which is 9.5 strikeouts per game. The Halos are second in the majors in the category, and you can expect Anderson to add to their woes. The southpaw isn’t a big strikeout guy, but he should be able to get to at least six in this spot.
Tim Tawa 2+ Hits + Runs + RBI (+105)
The Marlins and Diamondbacks clash in the desert, and Tawa looks to keep up his recent hot form for the Sidewinders against Miami RHP Sandy Alcantara.
Tawa has hit safely in six consecutive outings, including a three-hit game Tuesday in Kansas City which saw him leave the yard. He has hit safely in seven in a row, going 12-for-30 (.400) with the homer, three RBI, and four runs scored. Let’s back Tawa to get to at least two combined in the nightcap.
