Wednesday's Best MLB Player Prop Bets

(All bets one unit, unless otherwise specified.)

Max Scherzer Under 15.5 Pitching Outs (-133 at DraftKings)

For my first MLB player prop for Wednesday, I am betting against Max Scherzer of the Toronto Blue Jays lasting more than five innings against the Detroit Tigers.

Toronto is trying desperately to stay alive for the final Wild Card spot in the American League. They enter Wednesday's game two games behind Cleveland, half a game behind Texas, and a game ahead of Baltimore. The defending American League Champions will need to pull out all the stops for a win on Wednesday. Giving Scherzer an extended leash feels counterintuitive to that aim.

The 42-year-old has a 6.38 ERA this season and has not thrown more than 83 pitches in either of his two September starts. Most of Toronto's top relievers are rested, and the Blue Jays have an off day on Thursday. I do not think John Schneider will hesitate to go to the bullpen if Scherzer struggles early.

The matchup isn’t exactly favorable for Scherzer either. Detroit enters this game as one of the hottest offenses in the Majors. The Tigers have won six consecutive games, including the first two games of this series. They have scored at least six runs in all six games and are averaging eight runs per game during the streak.

Too many factors are working against Scherzer for me to expect him to make it into the sixth inning. I am taking the Under on his pitching outs on Wednesday.

Blake Snell to Record a Win (+105 at Fanatics)

Next, I am betting on Blake Snell to get the victory on Wednesday when he and the Los Angeles Dodgers face the Cincinnati Reds.

The Dodgers have held the Reds to one run in taking the first two games of their current four-game set. This follows last week's three-game Dodgers sweep, during which Cincinnati scored just six runs. Los Angeles has had Cincinnati's number, and I don't see that changing on Wednesday.

Snell has made six starts since returning from the Injured List last month. He has been one of baseball’s best pitchers during that stretch. The left-hander has allowed just four total runs in those six games while striking out 46 batters. He has also won four of those six starts. On the other side of the coin, Andrew Abbott has had a rough stretch lately.

Abbott has pitched just nine total innings across his last three games. In that span, he has given up 20 hits, including six home runs. He has allowed 17 runs and struck out just six total batters. Even though Los Angeles is missing Shohei Ohtani, their lineup is more than capable of producing against a pitcher as struggling as Abbott.

Snell and the Dodgers should face little resistance from a Reds team that is making travel plans for the winter. I am expecting Snell to record his fifth win of the season on Wednesday.

Otto Lopez Over 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI (-141 at DraftKings)

Finally, I am going with Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins to register at least two combined hits, runs, and runs batted in on Wednesday against Merrill Kelly and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Lopez has failed to record a hit in either of the first two games of this series. However, he entered the series with an eight-game hitting streak. He had at least three total HRRBI in seven of those eight contests. I expect him to get back on track against Kelly, a pitcher Lopez has feasted on in their previous encounters.

Lopez is 6-for-10 with three doubles against Arizona's right-hander. There should be little chance of a walk when the pair squares off. Kelly walks just seven percent of right-handed hitters, while Lopez draws a free pass less than six percent of the time he comes to the plate.

Given Lopez's numbers versus Kelly, I am not opposed to going the total bases route. You can find that player prop at plus-money on most sportsbooks. But considering Kelly's general struggles, including a 6.65 expected ERA this season, I think taking Lopez to surpass his HRRBI threshold is the safer bet. If this price moves above -160, then I think total bases makes the most sense.
