Fading the Angels against righties is the gift that keeps on giving. They have the highest strikeout rate facing right-handed pitching on the year, and draw an elite strikeout artist today. Michael King is in the 85th percentile in K% and 68th in CSW% among starting pitchers. While that might not leap off the page per se, he has incredible movement on his pitches and can rack up the strikeouts in an advantageous matchup like this.
This won’t feel great with his raw stuff, but it hasn’t turned into as many strikeouts this year. Skenes is under this line in five of eight starts this year, and ranks in the 52nd percentile in CSW%. The Mets are a difficult team to punch out as well, and are 24th in K% (20%) and 8th in wRC+ (113) against right-handed pitching. In fact, 22 of the last 25 right-handed starters to face them have stayed below this total.
Even in the most difficult matchup, Yusei usually finds his way to at least five strikeouts. He has eclipsed this mark in seven of eight starts this season, 24-of-32 last year, and 20-of-32 in 2023. Add that all up, and we’re looking at a 70.8% hit rate over the past three seasons. The Padres are tough to strikeout, but it’s not like they’re entirely immune. We have seen Max Fried (8 strikeouts), Carlos Rodon (5), and Bailey Falter (6) get over this line against them over the past week, so why can’t Kikuchi?
