This number is confusing. Zack Wheeler is one of the best starters in the game. He has hit the less than on this in 14 out of 16 starts this season and 23 out of 32 last year. Add that up, and we’re working with a 77% hit rate over his past 48 starts.
Wheeler hasn’t had any trouble taming the Padres in the past either. San Diego has a combined .163 batting average and .234 xwOBA across 97 plate appearances against him. They have also been on a slide as of late, ranking 23rd in batting average against righties over the past 30 days.
While he hasn’t been the full-blown pinata from the past few seasons, Patrick Corbin still isn’t anything special, and rarely works deep into the game. He has hit the less than on this in 10 out of 14 starts this year, ranking in the bottom 28th percentile in xFIP, 46th in xERA and 32nd in strikeout rate.
Baltimore just faced him last week and tagged him for nine hits and five earned runs across his five innings of work.
Another superstar with another confusing number. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has exceeded this number in 37 of his last 53 games (69%), and feasts off southpaws, particularly Carlos Rodon. He is 8-for-12 with two doubles and a home run in 15 plate appearances against the Yankees left-hander.
