MLB Sleeper Picks Player Predictions
Sleeper Record: 198-116 (63.1%)
Matthew Boyd has been out for the vast majority of the season, but he is back, and performing well. He has allowed just one earned run in four of his five starts and just shut down one of the best lineups in all of baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Boyd held them to just three hits and one earned run while striking out six, with nary a walk, across six frames. Tonight he faces the pathetic White Sox, who have a laughable 38 wRC+ over the past 30 days against left-handed pitching. Nine of the past 12 left-handed starters to face them have hit the more than on this number.
He hasn’t been at his absolute best as of late. but that doesn’t mean this line should have shifted this low. This has been priced at 17.5 throughout the year, at a far worse price, too. Cole Ragans is one of the premier starters in the game and has exceeded this mark in 21 of his 28 starts, not including one start interrupted by rain. He ranks in the top 80th percentile in xERA, 90th in xFIP, 94th in K% and 97th in swinging strike rate. Despite a poor stretch, Ragans did rebound in his last start, firing six innings of shutout ball and striking out seven vs. the Twins. It’s not the easiest matchup facing the Yankees in the Bronx, but they haven’t been seeing the ball very well lately, sporting a 100 wRC+ (17th) across the past two weeks.
Simply put, Zebby Matthews shouldn’t have his walk line listed at 1.5. He had a 2.7 BB% across 205 career innings in the minors, hitting the less than on this line in 18 out of 19 starts in the lower levels and in four of five starts in the big leagues. Matthews faces a slumping Angels lineup with the worst wRC+ (73) against righties over the past month. There is no reason for him not to pummel the zone the way he usually does, so back the less than here.
