Renegade comes into the Derby in peak form, having rattled off back-to-back prep wins, most notably a decisive victory in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby after also taking the Sam F. Davis Stakes. He profiles primarily as a closer with tactical flexibility:

Preferred style: Off-the-pace runner who makes a sustained late charge
Signature move: Strong late acceleration/grinding finish that builds through the stretch

Betting Outlook

All Renegade does is finish in the money. In five career races, Renegade has never finished worse than third, winning each of his last two starts, including the Arkansas Derby on March 28. Trainer Todd Pletcher has won two Kentucky Derbys, but he hasn’t won since 2017 with Always Dreaming, while jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has never won the Kentucky Derby. In fact, Ortiz has never finished better than fourth. Another thing working against Renegade is drawing Post 1, a position no winner has come from since Ferdinand in 1986. Despite everything working against him, I’m taking Renegade to at least finish in the top four due to how well this horse has run in recent months.
